| Before removing the vanos solenoid in order to replace the camshaft position sensor on my E46 330 (M54), I managed to confuse myself about which way to turn the wrench! It looks to me like the solenoid threads from the back of the engine towards the front, meaning that counterclockwise is towards the driver's side. Standing in front of the car that means turning the wrench to the right, which seems like clockwise. I'm easily confused.

Looking at the top of the fastener in question, it' always righty tighty lefty loosy. So if the head of the bolt you are looking at is facing the windshield, to loosen one would turn towards the driver side fender.
