There seems to be a bigger spread between "trade in" and "private sale" values on a 2002M5 than I have seen on other vehicles. If it was close, I'd prefer just to work with my dealer. Where can I get an idea of what a reasonable price for 2002 M5 would be? Does taking out a classified with the club tend to help or hurt. I can see the benefit of being able to provide service records from a known dealer. But, is the audience just too small to get a competitive price? I appreciate any advice.

Chapter members can submit a classified ad. Be sure to read the instructions carefully so that your ad will be accepted. It will run on both the website and be printed in the Bimmer newsletter. Lots of people successfully sell cars this way. It is comforting to buy a car from another club member as they tend to be well maintained and club members don't cheat other club members. (Right?!)

The best way to determine the car value is to look at eBay's completed auctions that actually met the reserve price.

I can understand why a dealer would shy away from an M5 today. looking outside the window at the weather and then looking at the computer screen for signs of economy (whatever stands for 'economy" nowadays) plus the fact that 2002 probably can not be financed by a potential buyer... you get the idea.

Of course I see absolutely no negatives in advertising the car right here on the site. Just put as much info as you can and good pictures.

I recommend posting your ad on an enthusiast site such as this one: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=227

Thousands upon thousands of members and a national exposure.

You can also try sites like Roadfly and e46fanatics.
