repenttokyo (11/17/2009) what is it?
At Watkin's Glen, the Boston Chapter ran a simplified version of GVC's late passing program. Students were strongly encouraged to both give and take point-bys on every available passing zone, even at the end of the straight. The idea is that the cars get single-file by the apex and learn how to trail brake and deal with driving off line. There were also drills held during portions of certain sessions where pairs of cars would trade off giving/receiving late point-bys. The classroom contained special material on late passing and on driving off-line.
Also, at the joint Boston/White Mountain October event, the WMC's orange-stripe passing program was in full operation. Most advanced and instructor cars had stripes and passing was allowed by point-by just about anywhere. This program combined several things: late passing into the turn. Passing in the turn. Passing on exit of turn. Passing in non-traditional passing zones (i.e. T6-T8). This event was run by WMC this year. There is a "clinic" which you must attend to obtain the stripes, and both the passing and being-passed car must have stripes.

| Sounds like an interesting addition for those drivers who qualify, so I would think that it would be preferable to utilize a few times to get people used to the practice.

The Boston Chapter doesn't use orange passing stripes; that's the White Mountain Chapters. I strongly suspect that the Glen event will have a repeat of the "late passing program". Tremblant might as well. I would tend to doubt that Monticello will, as it is a new track and we may all be pretty busy learning it (but who knows). I'm not sure about the NHMS events. The topic has been raised and discussed a bit, but without any resolution that I'm aware of.

| It has been a regular feature at tracks I driven on since Boston BMW used it for the advanced group last Sept. at WGI. As long as the ASL driver has the training or an instructor is there for help, I would hope that open passing will find its time and place at the Monticello BMW HPDE. Once you tried it, your`re hooked.

I drove with the PCA at NJMP Thunderbolt last October in the advanced run group and we had a policy of passing with a point by—anywhere. Any and all cars in the advanced run group could give or receive a point by pass. It helped a lot in the "Jersey Devil" section of the track (the long long left corner before pit entrance).
I have not tried the other methods (orange stripe, etc.). I personally think that all cars in the advanced run group should be able to manage passing anywhere with a point by, and if you are not comfortable with that, you could drop down one group. (or something).
Anyway, I like it! More passing please.
