| Just bought an 86 325es and was attempting to change all the fluids. I got the car up on jack stands and was getting ready to change the oil when I noticed an odd situation where the drain plug is supposed to be. It is a wing nut with a small round screw sticking out of the center. I was able to loosen it, but no oil came out. It also would only loosen so far and not come off the pan. I checked around the oil pan an d found no other plug. Am I missing the plug?? What is ths thing and do I proceed? Thanks, Mark

It sounds like the original oil pan drain hole was stripped of its threads . With nothing to cling to, the old drain plug was useless. In its place is a universal drain plug...

...that utilizes a wing nut to compress a rubber stopper to close off the stripped hole. You'll need to extract the item to get the oil to drain. When the wing nut is backed out, press it in towards the pan, that might loosen its grip & allow you to remove it & drain the oil.
You should have the oil pan drain hole threads repaired. The rubber stopper is intended to be a temporary fix .

I'm a bit late on this post, but I had a bad experience similar to your rubber universal plug, and the damage was done by the "Quick Oil" change shop I erroneously went to about 5 years ago. They came into the waiting room and told me they "...found the oil drain plug stripped...but could fix it for me for $19.95...." It was only an old Ford truck...they lost my business anyway.
