Hello,

I have a Miata I would like to bring to BMWCCA Driving Schools, but I don't think it is prepped correctly yet. As I read the rules below, A Miata with a hard-top (and roll-bar) is still classed as a convertible. Is that correct?

Therefore, the car would need race seats and 5 or 6 point harnesses, right?

Thanks,

Josh

Rules for CONVERTIBLES are as follows:

Definition for Convertibles and Cars with Removable Roof Sections
‘Convertibles’ are defined as cars with retractable tops, whether soft-top or folding hard-top.
‘Removable roof sections’ include targa tops and T-tops. These are characterized by part of a fixed body structure above the passenger compartment.

Participation Requirements - Convertibles
Convertibles are not allowed to participate in sessions driven at speed unless the car is equipped with the following minimum requirements:
An approved roll bar or roll cage. Both driver and instructor sitting up right with helmets are below the top of the roll bar.
Five (5) or Six(6) point harnesses for both driver and instructor where belts are properly routed.
Arm Restraints
Participation Requirements - Removable Roof Sections
Cars with removable roof sections are allowed provided that both driver and instructor sitting up right with helmets are below the top of the roll bar or roof line.

Exclusions - Cars equipped only with factory pop-up posts or similarly activated rollover protection are not allowed.

I recently prepped my Miata for use at the CCA driving schools. I installed Ultrashield seats and 5 and 6 pt harnesses. I also have a hard dog rollbar, and made sure the seats were low enough so that my head is below the rollbar by the appropriate amount.

My car is being examined by the event chair this week to make sure that I pass their safety standards. If you would like to check out my setup and find out who I had do the work for me, then feel free to contact me and we can arrange it.

Yes, a Miata in a convertible. Yes, it would need 5+ point harnesses. Technically, it doesn't need race seats, but unless you can install a proper 5+ point harness in the stock seat (and I have no idea if this is possible), you would need seats plus harness plus roll bar (or cage).

If in doubt, call HMS Motorsport about the harnesses / seat interaction.

It's not possible to install a 5 pt harness on a stock miata seat without cutting. HMS told me they wouldn't accept a cut seat at tech.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Well, I'm picking up some harnesses tomorrow and the rollbar is in the trunk of my WRX, so I just need seats now.
