My charging system on my 1991 525 recently malfunctioned and smoked a bunch of wires, my alternator, and my starter. I need someone who can check out my electrical system and diagnose what needs to be fixed. I am relatively new to the area and don't know where I should go - there are a few shops near me, but I have no idea as to their reputation. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Auto Engineering (fka Autobahn) in Lexington is an excellent independent shop.  I have taken my cars there for the last 5 years, in part because their diagnostic work is so good.  Ask for Chip.

Two good choices above, although 3D isn't exactly close to you. Also close is GPS (German Performance Service). They are behind Whole Foods/Alewife on New St. in Cambridge.

Also highly recommended are Schneller (Mike Morris) in Newbury, MA and Turner (Amesbury, MA).

In addition to Auto Enginnering, all of the above are BMW-specialist shops that really know what they are doing. (There are lots of other good ones too, but these come to mind).

Also BPG (Bavarian Performance Group) in Stoneham. Haven't been there, but I've heard very good things.

I've been bringing mine to 3d, they have done great work for a great price.

Contact the Benz Den on Pleasant St in Belmont. (617) 489-6548.  First quality repairs to German makes using factory parts and procedures.  When the local dealers can't solve the problem for a post warranty car, they send the customer to the Benz Den and Dave figures it out.

I have to say - I was not impressed with the service I received at Auto Engineering. I will not be going back, and in fact have not in the past year - I found a better solution at New Street Auto in Fresh Pond.

The service at Auto Engineering is certainly not what it used to be... you're not the first to experience this. Its been all down hill since Chip left the company. I recommend going to see Chip at Village European.
