Seekonk Speedway July 3rd

Anyone who for some reason has no plans tomorrow night and wants to see a more chaotic driving event, come check out the Seekonk Speedway. I race there every thrill show in the spectator drags. You can participate in the drags if you'd like but I'd recommend going to watch. If anyone might find a bunch of idiots crashing into each other on purpose entertaining, this is probably for you! I'm pretty competitive in the drags, but it's tough to win. Here's a clip of my first place finish last month. Our BMW autocross #2 is this Sunday and we at NCR Porsche have some spots open for Saturday. As this is the 4th weekend in a row for the 2 Porsche regions a few of our drivers are electing to do a track day in NH instead. Course design by myself and we hope to re use most of it in the reverse direction on Sunday, per meeting with Ralph and Rob last Saturday night at 31 Main.

BMW Test Drive event in Foxboro

Did anyone go to the BMW test drive event this weekend across the street from Gillette Stadium? If you did, how did you like it? What did you drive?

I thought the autocross thing they setup was kind of neat. Comparing the 328xi with the A4 quattro and Mercedes 300C on the small driving course. I can say I'd never consider a Mercedes after testing that car out. A4 wasn't bad. The BMW was obviously the best :) though all the cars were pretty basic models and didn't have much in the torque department.

North Country Porsche takes the Zone One Challenge

It happened this past weekend at Devens. The 25th running of the Zone One Autocross Challenge that includes 15 regions of the PCA was held here at Devens. From Northern New Jersey up to the maritime provinces in Canada. NCR (my region) hosted the event and I even got to do the course design on day one. At the end of day one we were tied with NNJ with 90 points each. Nail biter. Day two we turned up the heat. So did they. At the end of the event we were still tied. Tie breaker rules came into play and our tie breaker driver took a first giving NCR the victory trophy for the very first time in the 25 years of the Zone One Competition.

Two Day High Performance Kart Racing Instruction for All Skill Levels

East Bridgewater, Mass. (July 27, 2010) - F1 Outdoors has launched a new program, the Championship Kart Racing School, that puts drivers in competition-designed high performance karts - teaching them skills and tactics the very best drivers use at the highest levels of competition. The 2-day, limited enrollment program provides hours of track time with top-notch instructors, plus classroom sessions that help racers hone their mental ability as well as their physical skills. A class is scheduled for Aug 18 -19.
Competitors pilot state-of-the-art high performance CRG KTII chassis equipped with 28-horsepower Rotax FR 125 engines. Capable of speeds up to 75 mph, these are the same karts used by the VW Jetta TDI Cup kart qualifiers, one of the most competitive kart racing events held each year.
Class sizes are limited to 10 students, ensuring a low student/instructor ratio. All participants must be licensed drivers 18 years or older. All aspects of the program take place at F1 Outdoors, considered the 'gold standard' of outdoor tracks by the prestigiousWorld Karting News magazine. The classes run 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day and includes lunch, the itinerary features:
DAY ONE: Learning the ropes - with 6 track sessions

* The day 1 starts in the classroom, with an overview of the basics involved in driving and operating a high performance kart.
* Next comes a track walk, where drivers learn about the racing line & braking points.
* The six track sessions start with lead/follows with the instructor at a medium pace, gaining speed progressively, learning kart performance and reactions at different speeds.
* Lunch and a discussion of the morning's driving are held between the two sets of driving sessions.
* After lunch, high speed driving sessions focus on braking and passing.

DAY TWO: Advanced & and Accelerated Skills

* The day starts in the classroom with a recap of Day 1 training, followed by a high speed lead/follow session.
* Session 2 on the track focuses on high speed passing drills, timed to gauge improvement through the session.
* Session 3 is all racing - a high speed open lapping session with passing allowed, with timed laps.
* All the track time is followed by lunch and a discussion of the morning sessions and Q&A.
* After lunch, three more track sessions include timed high speed open lapping session, focusing on passing techniques.

Mont Tremblant Aug 2-3 with COM

Those attending BAB can get warmed up with COM -- novices, solo drivers and instructors -- all are welcome!

The COM event at Mont Tremblant is Aug 2-3. Students may solo or have an instructor on day 2 (virtually all students solo on day-2 but instructors are available if needed). You can expect ~ two hours of track time on day 1 and up to four hours on day 2 (open track time varies due to the time trial).

New COM members are eligible for a $100 rebate. All attendees receive "Frequent Driver Points" for other 2010 events: NHMS (Aug, Oct), Watkins Glen (Sep) and NJMP (Thunderbolt circuit, Nov).

Fort Devens 2010 (Mostly) Complete Schedule

I put together a comprehensive schedule of Ft Devens autocrosses this season. Last season I had a free weekend and was trying to find a list like this to see who I could run with. I was bored and put one together for this season. I may have missed a club but there aren't very many open days in my list so I doubt it. Also, I'm not 100% sure on the admission rules so check with the club specifically. Enjoy.

Monticello May 3-4 with COM

Those attending the Boston event at Monticello can get a preview with COM -- novices, experienced drivers and instructors are all welcome to attend.

The COM Sports car club DE and Time Trial event at Monticello is May 3-4. Students may solo or have an instructor for day 2 (most students are typically signed off to solo day-2, but instructors are available if needed). Attendees can expect about two hours of track time on day 1 and up to four hours of practice and open track on day 2 (due to the Time Trial, open track time varies on day 2).

New members are eligible for a $100 rebate. All attendees are eligible for "Frequent Driver Points" for redemption at other 2010 events: Mont Tremblant (Aug 2-3), Watkins Glen (Sept 14-15) NJMP (Nov 4-5) or NHMS (May/Jun, Jul, Aug, or Oct).

The Porsche Club Northeast Region has decided to open registration to 10 non-members (driving non-Porsches). We are attempting to raise money to upgrade our timing equipment. Normally, the region does not allow non-members who are driving non-Porsche cars, as that is what our membership prefers.

Cost is $50 per person
Events are run very similar to the other clubs.
Usually 8 runs - 60 to 90 second range

Registration details:
-each Non-member MUST email me (autocross registrar) for pre-approval prior to signing up.
-Must be an experienced autocrosser (have completed at least 10 full autocrosses).
-Preregistration by Motorsportreg.com AND payment is required. (you will be turned away if you did not sign up and pay)

Sunday in the Park has evolved from what was essentially considered a local car show 27 years ago into a Car Show and Concours extravaganza devoted to automotive beauty, history and diversity. The Park will be engulfed with interesting vintage and historic sports cars, classics, customs and hot rods, woodies, trucks, racing cars, and motorcycles. There will also be marque car club groupings including Morgan, celebrating their 100th anniversary, Porsche, BMW, Corvette and Aston Martin.

All of this makes for a wonderful day out in the scenic green valley of Lime Rock Park.

Tickets ranged from $15-80.

It looks like the BMW CCA will be assisting with a special BMW Corral this year, which will feature parade laps on Saturday. We are organizing performance day(s) with 2-2 hour sessions and 4-1 hour sessions where you learn more about the dynamics behind car control. In Control’s experienced instructors will be on hand to assist you and answer any car related questions you might have.

So You Think You Can Drive?- In Control

My name is Chris Clermont. I am an automotive enthusiast from Nh trying to bring the community together, to promote the construction of a New Motorsports park in the New England area. The time has finally come, I am organizing the So You Think You Can Drive?- Challenges.

The first one is going to be next Friday June 12th 2009. I scheduled the date last min, I couldn't get a weekend until August 2nd, but I have a few Friday events scheduled in between. The location is in North Andover, Ma.

So You Think You Can Drive?- In Control, June 12th, June 26th, July 24, and Aug 2nd 2009 these are all day events starting at 8am with the In Control challenge. Around 12:30pm we will transition to an autoX event where drivers can get seat time with their own cars running until around 5:30pm.

These will probably be the most expensive of the challenges until I secure sponsors and finish the development of the website concepts in the pipeline. It is $299 per driver to participate, you will use our cars the first half of the day. Participants may get insurance discounts for going through the program, they will have to check with their insurance provider.

If you know of anyone who might be interested I am limited to 20 drivers per event, have them contact me be before June 9th for the June 12th event. My email is below, I will try to stay active on here, so if you pm me I should get to it within a couple of days.

I figured I would post some clips of the other kind of racing that I do. I run in the spectator drags at seekonk speedway and have been doing it for 6 years now. This is what I was running to after mid-day during last weekend's autox, but ended up being postponed later on in the day until Monday. So here's some clips from Monday:

GoRacingTV.com is boosting its content with coverage of arguably, in terms of number of competitors, one of the most popular motorsports in the world while unveiling a new look to the Web site that will give viewers more opportunities to interact and share their videos from the racing world.

GoRacingTV.com is a bi-weekly, web-based video show that began airing episodes in February. Originally targeting the club racing enthusiast, the show is now adding the sport of autocross to its programming lineup. The segments will be hosted by veteran auto crossers Mike “Junior” Johnson and Pat Griffith.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight this challenging sport,” Johnson said. “Autocross events are held throughout the country nearly every weekend, and we want to showcase those competitors from the people who are out to win championships to those that come out just for the fun of it. We’ll also review some of the products that these racers use to hone their own skills or give their cars that competitive edge.”

In addition to the autocross content, the new look of the site includes a news feed to the main page to keep enthusiasts up to date with the latest news and events from around the country. There is also now a “Videos” section where racers can upload and share their own racing videos, and there will be a track information section that gives links to North America’s road courses. Visitors can also go to the “Product Reviews” and “Interviews” section to find individual topics from past show episodes.

Henry “Chip” VanVurst and Errol Tucker, executive producers and co-hosts of GoRacingTV.com, say that their bi-weekly show provides racing industry businesses a cost effective and unique opportunity to market their products directly to the racing consumer. “Because club racing and autocross are so very heavily web-based, both in terms of exchange of information among enthusiasts, and the purchase of products, our show offers businesses a fast and economically viable way to reach their target customer, the racing enthusiast,” Tucker said.

Both Johnson and Griffith have been auto crossing for more than 10 years. Johnson, who recently started club racing, won the SCCA’s Overall Pro Solo Championship in 2007 and has won a total of seven Solo and Pro Solo class championships. Johnson is also co-owner of the Evolution Performance Driving School. In addition to autocross, Griffith participates in high performance driving events where he instructs with SCCA and NASA, and he also road raced for a few years in Improved Touring.

Non-Boston event: Mont Tremblant June 8-9 with COMSCC

The COM Sports Car Club is again hosting a 2-day event at Le Circuit in Mont Tremblant with membership fees waived to any newcomers. The 2-day event is generally undersubscribed which means a lot of track time to anyone who attends.

The format is an HPDE school the 1st day, drive solo (open track) and a time trial (3 timed laps) the 2nd day. Anyone who wishes or needs an instructor the 2nd day will be provided one, but virtually everyone drives solo the 2nd day. Here's your chance to get rid of an annoying passenger!

Mont Tremblant is a great venue -- you can really get to know the track w/ COM and then impress your friends when you return for the BAB event later in the season!

24 Hours of LeMons

The 24 Hours of LeMons, the national endurance racing series for $500 cars, makes its only '09 New England stop on 11-12 July at Stafford Speedway in Connecticut. Over two days of racing, teams take on exploding gaskets, fried alternators, and wild on-track action in order to take home glorious cash prizes—paid out in canvas sacks of nickels. Last year, a rusty Mazda took home the top prize--this year, it could be you!

BA/BE Rally - New York to New Orleans - June 1-5

I figured I would put this out there for any BMWCCA members who might not have heard about this event. The BABE Rally (Big Apple to Big Easy) is a cross country road rally for teams of car enthusiast driving cars that cost $500 or less. The premise is simple, the experience epic. I am a veteran of the 2007 and 2008 events, and I can tell you its an amazing experience. Its not too late to register for this year's event, the deadline is the end of this month.

The event is not a race, but rather a challenge to see who can cobble together a dirt cheap piece of machinery that can make it 1,600 miles in five days through some of the longest highways and craziest back roads to be found east of the Mississippi. The route includes everything from long highway slogs on I-20 to the 321 curves of the Tail of the Dragon. Every day teams compete in new scavenger hunt style challenges along the route. Points are awarded each night with an awards ceremony topping off the event on the evening of night 5 in New Orleans.

NESHOC Autocross May 3rd. Drivers needed.

May 3rd has 27 drivers signed up so far. www.motorsportreg.com This hard core group often gets more than 8 runs in at an event. They also cap the drivers to maybe 60 max. If the turnout stays low there will be a ton of runs for all drivers.:D:w00t: Unfortunatly, low turnout means covering a huge piece of the course for every worker.:crying:

They usually run about a 120 second course if they have a full turnout. I'm guessing that they will run a standard course if the turnout is low.

7th Annual Southeast Sharkfest 2009 5/21-ish, Winston-Salem, NC

We got this event information which I thought I'd share with the club. This is NOT a Boston Chapter event.

For those of you not familiar with our event, we began as a show centric to the original e24 chassis 6-series BMW. Over the years we have expanded to include the new 6-series and a plethora of unique classic and modern show cars. Last year our event drew over one hundred vehicles for the four-day extravaganza.

This year we have moved our event to the Memorial Day weekend of May 22nd, 2009 in order to add another day of events to the schedule (since Monday is a holiday for most). A quick overview of the events will include a mountain group drive on Friday and a all day social gathering on both Thursday night and Sunday. On Saturday, as a first for our event, we will be joining forces with another large show in the area: Vintage at the Vineyards. Our events will be entirely separate (judging, awards etc) however the actual showing will be a combined effort resulting in a gathering that will likely approach 250 (or more) very unique vehicles.

Jaquar Club Autocross event

For those members who are looking for some more seat time this spring, the local Jaguar club (Jaguar Association of New England or JANE) is having a slalom event at Devens on April 18.

They charge $35 and usually do 5 - 50sec runs.

Ok Ladies and Gentlemen, we are doing this again. The first event was a huge success. On a Sunday in February when the temps hovered around freezing there were 75+ cars. For this event Sam Lurie from The Beantown Sound and myself have graciously been given permission to use the parking lot at Trade Center 128 in Woburn. This is a new building and very clean, plenty of parking and the on site Dunkin Donuts will open for us.

***Important Things To Remember***
Please be mindful of the surroundings. Place all trash in trash bags, or take it with you when you leave. The Tradecenter has been kind enough to give us the oppurtunity to use there parking lot. This is a great oppurtunity for us so be on your best behaviour! This means absolutely NO DONUTS, NO BURNOUTS!!! If you see someone acting up, tell them to stop. Tradecenter is open to allowing regular meets to happen on the property, as long as they feel we are responsible enough

Please try and spread the word. The more the merrier! We don't know your friends, your next door neighbours, your co-workers; Reach out to them, invite them, and we can all gather and share in our passion. This event will be advertised in the area and at the office park. The event is RAIN OR SHINE. There is a 5 story parking garage with ample space for hundreds of cars. In the event of rain or snow, we will be meeting inside the garage.

Lester Seal, master technician, Mini Cooper owner and Miata guru, is hosting an open house/tech session Feb 28th. Apex has maintained my Spec Miatas and has done all alignments and suspension setup for my BMW club racing J-Stock M3 and my Spec E36 325i, he knows his stuff and is a stand-up guy.

Much of the work performed in our shop - Apex Automotive Engineering - ranges from adding high performance accessories to full race-car prep. A question I often get from fellow car enthusiasts is how do I get started in high performance driving - what will it cost, what do I need to do to my car, what safety equipment do I need.
