Winter Driving Schools

Good Morning to all.

I just became a forum newbie last night. I purchased my first Bimmer a month ago. 2011 335 xi. It's quite a car.
Been researching available winter snow driving schools for this Jan or Feb up in northern NE.
I was wondering if ALL the schools require you to drive your own car of if some have cars for you to drive on your first visit and then bring your own on subsequent.
My concern is that on my first attempt at driving on ice and or ice and snow, that I will lose control of my car and plow into a tree or some other unmovable object.
I am planning on put winter HAK's on my x-drive in mid December but was wondering from any knowledgable winter driving school graduates, what they recommend. Is there a likelihood of sustaining any damage?..

I must be doing something wrong because i have a hard time getting any kind of a decent launch in first gear.

I've tried shifting ASAP into second, i've tried shifting at 4-5k rpm.

Getting off the line is a real PIA.

Before i leased the ZM i test drove the Porche Cayman S and fist gear was much longer, you could get it up to a decent speed before you had to shift into second.

With the ZM= no speed in first.

If someone would be willing to show me the proper way to launch the Z4m, I would be happy to reimburse you for your time.

Hi,

New member of Boston chapter. Recently purchased a 2006 330xi 6MT with 32,000 miles. Have been doing some work to it. BMW performance exhaust, aFe Intake, BMW performance front strut brace, rear spoiler on the trunk deck. Just got LTW-5 D-Force lightweight Wheels, and Sumi HTR Z III tires. Got buy three tires get one free deal on these. Plan to use these wheels and tires for summer, and stock rims and run flats for winter. Possible future plans include suspension upgrade, maybe new front bumper cover/spoiler. Had many different cars over the years, including 68 MGB, and much more recently an Infiniti G5x Automatic, that I had a lot of work done to and turned into a beautiful one of a kind customized car. Now I've got my first BMW. I like it except the tight coilover suspension on my former Infiniti spoiled me. I'm in the Worcester area, and would like to find a decent independent shop not too far away that can do maintenance for me. Way back when I was kld and had my MGB I got to the point where I could do some work on it myself or with a little help, but on the BMW I'll be taking it to someone who knows what their doing, but I am interested for sure in learning more about the car.

Dear BMW CCA Members,

I am a junior at Connecticut College and my lifelong dream has been to work for BMW. When I was one or two years old, the only way my parents could get me to stop crying and go to sleep was by buckling me in to my dad's '87 325 and drive around until I passed out. Nineteen years and 173,000 miles later, I am the one behind the wheel of the E30 and the engine’s hum is just as soothing today as it was when I was in a car seat. I apologize if I am abusing the outline for this forum but if anyone can help me find an internship in the automotive industry, or has a connection at BMW you wouldn’t mind sharing, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I am a student of economics and international relations but am also relatively familiar with marketing, E-commerce, data analysis, and Automobile Magazine. I never miss an M3/S4 comparison test (even though they have now decided that the S4 is more comparable to the 335i; no big deal, I’d still pick the M3 over the RS4). While I wish I had a slightly better mechanical understanding of my greatest passion, I am well-read in the business aspects of the industry, and eager to learn its intricacies.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. In the four years I have been driving my car, I have learned that BMW owners are proud to be BMW owners. The MPower flag over my desk is proof of this fact. Every wave from one E30 driver to another reminds me of the greater community of passionate drivers that I am a part of. I understand the community; I understand the brand. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to work in a setting that will harness these qualities.

John MacDonald is in the hospital

John MacDonald is suffering from liver failure and is in St. Vincents Hospital in Worcester, room 2510. His prognosis is not good. Nobody knows how much time he has left. If you know John, or think that you might be able to get him to smile, please stop by and see him.

John has been the lead course designer for our BMW events for more years than I can remember. He has also been an instructor and would, and has, done anything that was asked to make our events run smoothly.

Please pass this info along to anyone that you think would like to visit John in the hospital.

When I was younger (circa 1990) and my dad had an E30 - he used to wave to fellow E30 and Bimmer drivers... and they would wave back.. Also, he would be courteous about letting them into traffic and I remember them generally returning the favor.. In any case, does anyone else still do this?

Also, a flash of the headlights was also pretty normal!

Boston Performance shops?

I have just moved to Boston and I am looking for a shop in the city that I could look for a job or an internship. It would be great if it was within range of the T since I will be going to school and this will be a part time thing.
A Euro performance shop would be ideal but honestly any shop that doesnt just do brakes and basic stuff would be great. Fabrication of race cars and performance kits is what I am really trying to get into so any shops that would do that sort of things is what I am trying to find.
Any body know any places?

Some (gawd awful) Disney show (Phineas and Pferb or something). There is a girl who is feigning interest in auto racing because the driver is cute. The boy is talking about how great this race is. The girl says, "And it's so interesting. First they turn left. Then they turn....." and the conversation trails off to nothing.

Got a chuckle out of that. Of course, given that I have a daughter, I didn't love the sex role stereotypes. I have hopes of sharing track days with her in a decade or so.

E39 540i off the road today

Traveling southbound on R13 in Townsend MA, just about a 1/2 mile south of the MA/NH border I came upon said car. It appeared to have lost control while heading north and wound up in the brush on a the hilly part of the southbound side. Silver 540i, unknown year (as I was watching my driving more then the car.)

Anyhow, I stopped and told the Townsend officer on the scene that "I'm a BMW Car Club of America member and friend of BMW drivers. If the driver is still here, I'm willing to give the person a ride to anywhere they need to go." He replied that "The driver seems to be all set, but thanks for asking."

Well, I do hope everyone in the car is OK! The car itself didn't look too badly damaged.

My bad, I was 5 miles or so further south when I recalled that the crew flatbedding the car out probably doesn't know enough to use the tow hook in the trunk tool kit, and I should have offered mine to give them one to tie down each end of the car. When I had to have my own E39 towed from home when the cyclonic separator valve failed, I borrowed a 2nd tow hook from my E28 and got the job done right. I think I'll pick up a couple of spares and throw them in the boot so both cars always have one for each end in case something like that ever happens again. I'd hate to think the tow crew would unknowingly do damage to the 540's aluminum rear suspension bits. :(
