Hi all.

By the way, that video was great. Too bad I was over-driving my car (blue E28) at the time. But thanks for this!

I will do my best to coax and cajole the powers that be to release the highly secretive racing results to the general population. If that doesn't work, I'll use threats. :)

If anyone has some great ice racing photos from this season, please contact me at once since I am looking for a cover shot for my chapter's newsletter...

Hey guys,

First post for me. Not even a member to BMW CCA but I plan on joining once i figure out how to. I'll be coming up for this weekends event. I've done autocross and drivers ed with another club before, but is there anything I should know before heading up on sunday? I'm excited to get my car seriously sideways for the first time!

No helmet required and there are classes for all types of tires. Bring warm clothing and maybe some sort cleats for your shoes for walking on the ice. It's a low-key event with instructors available to help your ice driving technique.

Lowering the air pressure in non-studded street tires seems to help on the ice so a lot of people bring a small compressor to pump them up after the event.

Sniper - I'd be a little concerned without washers on the inside of the tire. Not sure if they'll pull through or not. On the plus side, with the smooth surface of the carriage bolts, a tube might work just fine without a liner. I'm running three of my tires without tubes and they do hold air, for awhile. Just bring a good air compressor, not one of those 12v ones, you'll burn it up real fast. If I'm there you are welcome to use mine.

I had no problem bolting my tires from the inside. These are carriage bolts though, so we'll see how they hold up - i'm concerned about them ripping out. I should be able to use a tube without anything protecting it, though. I couldn't afford any fancy hardware for these, since i'm jobless at the moment. :-/

Those bolts look interesting, but I can see a problem. When I made my bolt tires, the first step is to drill the holes from the outside. When you try to push the bolts through from the inside (I used 1.5" fender washers on the inside), it is very difficult since you are going through many layers of steel belts. I ended up screwing the bolts through with a drill. I feel you may have a difficult time inserting the elevator bolts.

With the fixed washer on the inside you should be able to tighten the nuts on without the whole bolt spinning.

Another tip for any type of bolt, use bead sealer on each bolt before inserting it through the tire, this may help prevent leaks later on, although I'm not 100% sure it does any good based on the amount of air my tires leak.

I'm building some bolt tires for the next one.

On that note: would anybody be interested in a group buy for studs? I'm thinking about buying a bulk package of elevator bolts (maybe 10,000 or so), as well as washers and nuts. I can put together kits that will be easy to install and which won't lose air after inflation. Elevator bolts are handy because it's like a bolt and a fender washer in one, so it has lots of sealing area. They're not handy because they're really expensive in low volumes.

Great event! I was able to get quite a few runs on the practice course. I wish we could set up an autocross like that. When will the results be posted?

Great event yesterday, especially when the whole ice surface decided to shift! Apparently the ice was slippery, but I never noticed. Discovered that the Caddy makes a great hydraulic press for popping the bead on a tire.

As a past participant I recall we generally got done by lunch. So unless you are traveling a huge distance you'll have no trouble getting home by 6:25

Ice Racing information for 2010 is up on the website! As everyone should know from reading the website, we hold up to 5 Ice Races each season, the exact dates of which will be determined as the season progresses and will be disbursed via this, the Ice Racing Bulletin. We do NOT have fixed dates. Because of ice and weather conditions, any event is subject to postponement the day beforehand -- so please be sure to check the Ice Racing Bulletin before driving up!

Unless the rules have changed, helmets are not required. Passengers are allowed, be they human or otherwise. We discovered our alpha male Aussie Shepherd did not like sliding sideways on the ice very much.

I've also discovered that if you sit too long in the starting line and the rear seating area of your car has such ammenities as a 15" tv, ice chests, glasses and seating for 8, it tends to get filled with people rather quickly. Surprisingly it doesn't slow you down too much though....

Obviously depends on the year, but the last few we've raced the snow banks have been fairly low. In either case, cars do loose bits and pieces.

The registration form does have a section for tire information - make, age, miles, etc. I believe you just fill it out for each car/tire combination you have.

A couple quick questions, figure i will put them here:

I've done several ice races in the past while i was living in minnesota, and would like to continue doing so here. So...

I didn't see rules on passengers listed specifically - is it the typical one helmeted passenger in the front seat?

Also, how much snow accumulation is typical on the lake? Trying to convince a friend to drive but she's nervous about having her car end up like mine - zip tied together from many encounters with snowbanks. :)

Lastly - when i filled in the pre-registration forms i don't recall a field for tires, but the bulletin says i need to pre-register once for each driver-car-tire combination. How is that handled? I'm on super snows (ws-60's).

If you didn't race last year, you might want to check your "myBostonChapter" e-mail subscriptions to make sure that "Ice Racing" is checked.

Last year we revised how Ice Racing e-mail bulletins are sent. Only those users who had previous registered for events or who have subsequently selected that they want ice racing bulletins have that subscription selected. Why? Because Ice Racing entails multiple frequent e-mails right around the time of the events in order to get the latest ice conditions and event information out to the participants. This rapid-fire information was not of interest to those members not participating in or considering ice racing.

Ice Racing 2010 ?

Hi,

I used to compete in the Boston Chapter's ice racing events years ago, and I'm interested in joining the group for another winter of fun... ...but I can't seem to find any info about events scheduled for 2010.

Does anyone know if the Boston Chapter is still planning on holding ice racing events this winter?
