Behind the Wheel2001: An Oktoberfest Odyssey?by Fred Beck |
|
As I write this column I am looking forward to one of my favorite things - a BMW CCA driving school. In just a few hours, I'll be on my way to Watkins Glen for a 2-day school with the Gennessee Valley Chapter. By the time you read this, another driving school will be coming up, the Boston Chapter event at NHIS on October 10-11. Even if you are not driving those days, come on up, see what the school is about, and meet the fine folks who run and instruct in our schools.
The year 2001 is fast approaching. Why is this of interest? Because the Boston Chapter has the opportunity to host the '01 Oktoberfest, that's why. Your Board has looked into this possibility, and finds that we have many of ingredients necessary-our driving schools, club races, autocross, tech sessions, concours, and social events are all established and very well-run. However, what we lack is a club member who has the time and energy to coordinate such an endeavor. The Boston Chapter board and staff will support a bid for the O'fest, but due to time and workload constraints, none of us are able to Chair the event. That's where you come in! We are looking for one or more members to step forward to put together a business plan and proposal to the National Office. If the plan is accepted, these persons would coordinate the Oktoberfest, with support from the Chapter Board and Staff. If you have conference planning experience, are very organized, or just want to be involved, please contact Joe Marko at marko@boston-bmwcca.org. We need to make our bid soon, so please respond ASAP. Our annual Chapter Elections are also fast approaching. Voting will take place in person at the 4th Quarter meeting or by mail. All positions are open: President, Vice President/Activities Director, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Chair, and 3 Director positions. Candidates for President must have served on the Board previously. If you want to run for one of these offices, a nomination must be filed with the Chapter Secretary by October 8, 1999. Candidates may submit a 400 word (maximum) statement for publication in the November/December BIMMER. The deadline for publication is 5 pm October 8, 1999. Letters of endorsement will not be published in the BIMMER or the Chapter web site. Good news for our Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts members! Long-time club member Bruce Machon has volunteered to take over as our new Rhode Island Representative. Bruce has been involved in the club for quite a while, and has served on both the Board and Staff on numerous occasions. We are looking forward to working with Bruce to create new events in the RI area, including an autocross or two next spring. Bruce can use a hand from folks in the RI area, so if you want to get involved, or just want to share your thoughts and suggestions, please contact Bruce at (401) 941-5313. Hey, it's time to head to the track! If you have questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the Boston Chapter or the BMW CCA, please feel free to contact me at (781) 979-5686, or fbeck@boston-bmwcca.org. Enjoy your BMW, drive safe, and have fun!
