One Down, Seven to Go!

by Fred Beck and John Mansfield

Want to go racing, but don't have any money? Then autocrossing is for you! You can be a winner, and bring home the trophy of your dreams. For only $15 per day, you can experience the thrill of victory as you zip, zig, and zag through our new improved course of extreme yet simplistic challenges. In our objective and completely unbiased opinion, autocrossing is for everyone, including you!

What is an autocross?

An autocross is both a social event and a driving event that will help sharpen your driving skills, let you compete for prestigious season trophies, and explore the limits of your BMW's handling capabilities.

The course is laid out with soft rubber traffic cones on a large parking lot, and speeds are generally well below 50 mph. Competition is against the clock, not wheel-to-wheel. Aside from crushing a few cones and accelerating your tire wear, autocrossing need not be hard on your car. In fact, the fastest times come from the smoothest drivers. As with driving schools, the more you practice (and pay attention!), the smoother you get.

Great! Tell me more.

We are very pleased to announce that the Boston Chapter Autocross Series is again sponsored by the Massachusetts BMW Retailers, a group of the six Boston area BMW Dealerships. Last season we gave away a BMW Mountain Bike to a lucky winner, courtesy of our sponsors!

As in years past, the autocross will be held in an auxiliary parking lot at Rockingham Park horse race track in Salem, NH. Our novice program was a great hit last year, and we will do it again this season. Experienced autocrossers will be on hand to give informal instruction to novice autocrossers.

Even if you are not planning on running, come up and take a ride with one of these folks around the course. Passengers are welcomed and encouraged!

To double your opportunity for autocrossing, the Boston Chapter BMW CCA and the Mass Miata Club have once again agreed to a reciprocal arrangement, wherein all current BMW CCA members may participate in the Mass Miata Club autocrosses without becoming Mass Miata Club members. Similarly, the BMW CCA membership requirement is waived for all current members of the Mass Miata Car Club.

To learn more about the autocross series see the autocross pages on the Chapter website. All articles and autocross results, plus a number of cool photos of the past two years events, are available there.

We are again committed to making this the "best autocross series ever". Come join us, and make it happen! If you have any questions, please contact Fred Beck or John Mansfield. See you on the 18th!
