Driving School Preparation Tech Sessionby Fred Beck |
|
Despite a wet and gray day out, a few dozen hearty souls joined us Saturday, October 10 for a Performance Tech Session hosted by the Boston Performance Group. BPG is a retailer of aftermarket items for BMWs, with facilities for component installation. Matt Poor, president of BPG, gave us a tour of his facilities and an informative talk on performance upgrades and improvements available for modern BMW's, including brakes, suspension, and engine modifications. In addition to their wide selection of aftermarket products, BPG provides an in-house Dyno-Jet chassis dynamometer. The dyno, as it is known, measures the torque and horsepower curves at the drive wheels of both rear and front-wheel drive cars. The data is displayed in real time and then graphed as a chart and stored in their database for future reference. The dyno can be used to assess baseline performance, power increases due to performance upgrades, and the effects of engine tuning in real-time. Following an excellent lunch provided by BPG, club member Boyke Siahaan offered his '91 E30 M3 for use in demonstrating the dynamometer. We had fun trying to guess what his rear-wheel horsepower would be, with BPG awarding a prize to for the closest estimate. With the range of products available, easy-to-find location (one block from Herb Chambers BMW in Boston), and chassis dynamometer, BPG offers valuable services to all Boston Chapter club members. Be sure to stop by to visit them this year!
