November/December 1998 BIMMER The Road Ahead

Driving Events Coming Up

by Fred Beck

Greetings! The Road Ahead is back! As Neil Schneider was unfortunately unable to complete his term as Boston Chapter Vice President and Activities Director (VP/AD) due to professional constraints, I have volunteered to help out as Acting VP and AD until the Chapter elections are held later this month and a new VP/AD can be found. Please see candidate statements for this position elsewhere in the BIMMER.

Get Involved!

If you want to get more involved with the Chapter by organizing an event or volunteering to help with one, contact the Activities Director. He/she is the one who makes sure that Event Chairs gain access to the resources they need to create the outstanding Chapter events that we have become accustomed to. Remember, each event takes a lot of work and planning behind the scenes. We constantly need new people to add their energy to this process. So if you have the even the slightest inclination, make that call and get involved. With your help our events can only get better!

Upcoming Events

Speaking of events, we have quite a few coming up in November and December. Beginning at 11am on November 14 we have a Winter Prep Tech Session at Newport Imports in Rhode Island. The tech session includes a presentation on BMW factory-recommended winter preparation guidelines, a tour of the facilities, a 20% discount on BMW Parts, test drives and a dealer-provided lunch for all attendees. This should be a great event, and is the beginning of a renewed effort to provide more activities for our Rhode Island area members.

A few days later (November 18) the Fourth Quarter General Meeting will be at BMW of Peabody. This promises to be a spectacular event, as we will hold the Chapter Elections (mail-in ballots must be postmarked by November 7) and award trophies for the Massachusetts BMW Dealers Group Autocross Series and the New England Grand Prix Chapter Challenge. In addition, qualified participants in the E36 M3/Z3 Challenge will draw for a BMW Mountain Bike! With all this, plus a sumptuous buffet, you can’t afford to miss it!

Next, if you only go to one event this year, be sure to come to the annual Holiday Party on December 5th. We have a great new location, the Boylston Schul Verein (German School Club) in Walpole. It’s easy to get to, just 5 minutes off of Route 128, near Needham. The party theme is German, with tasty bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerkraut, and traditional German trimmings for all. The full cash bar also has excellent German beer and wine, as well as sodas for the kids. We will have a silent auction for BMW parts and assorted goodies, the traditional food drive, and a guest appearance by Santa Claus! Please RSVP soon. See the announcement in this BIMMER for more details.

Last but not least, with the autocross season only barely over many club members are already anticipating experiencing the sideways dimension of reality in the Boston Chapter Annual Ice Time Trial Series. We are hoping for a cold winter (at least up in New Hampshire!) so that we can have a full Ice Time Trials series this year. Whether you are an avid track event fan, an autocrosser, a commuter or just an occasional driver of your BMW, you will get a lot out of participating in the Ice-Time Trials this season. Stay tuned for more details!
