Autocross #2 Avoids The Rain!

by Fred Beck

Despite threatening skies and a heavy downpour as I made my way out of Boston early Sunday morning, June 1, the skies lightened and the prospects for the day grew brighter as I headed North to help set up the autocross course at Rockingham Park. As it turned out, the weather spared the BMW of Peabody 1997 Autocross #2 from the rain, and provided an excellent day of competition for the 30 drivers that did show up. Once again we got in six timed runs per driver plus a number of fun runs for those hardy few that stayed on to the end.

Again we had a number of interested onlookers, many who were just passing by and then pulled in to see what was going on. A teacher from a local school came to videotape the autocross so that he could show his auto shop class that there is more to performance driving then simply stepping on the gas pedal in order to go fast in a straight line. Also joining us for the day were three members of the Triumph Club of America, who showed us what they could do with their British automobiles.

While much fun was had, competition remains light in many of the BMW classes. I encourage all BMW owners to come out and drive the course at the next event, and I especially encourage those owners with vintage 2002s, 320is, M5s and M6s, and 7-series cars to join the series and help liven up the competition among BMWs.

The next event will be Sunday, July 13, followed by events on August 10, August 24, September 7, and October 5. If you have any questions about the autocross series please call John Mansfield or Fred Beck.

We hope to see you there!

CORRECTION: The times shown for Class H in the May 4 Autocross Results were incorrectly reported. The best two times, 35.746 and 35.937 seconds, were recorded by Ted Mendham which put him first in class with 12 points. Robert MacAlpine was second with 8 points, and Jeff Earl third with 6 points.
