Hello,

Oddly rust has surfaced along the bottom trim line of my 1998 740i.  The body shop quotes $700 to repair but warns it will come back.  New door asseblies are $800 at BMW Peabody; paint and installation is additional.

Has anyone experienced similar?

Veyr best,

Mike

I have the exact same problem on my 540. BMW will warranty rust but it has to be THROUGH the panel all of the way, if I've researched correctly. It couldn't hurt to ask, though.

I had the same problem on my '92 535i, and the same advice about getting new doors. I traded the car before fixing them.  If the 740 is made the same as the E34, the lower door trim pieces trap moisture and salt, etc against the door and it will rust again unless maintained obsessively. There are tiny drains in the trim pieces which inevitably get clogged up.

Best,

Jon Brush
