At best its another time to teach. At worst, he'll understand your reasoning.
I'd let students hand in instructor evals without a necessary face to face meeting. Most of 'em aren't shy anyway, but they won't be inhibited in their responses. |

| | | | | One of my biggest concerns has been the lack of input from some instructors in the eval at the end of the day's run. Most of the time my eval comes comes bt email.
Last year I was placed in group 3 in NHIS, the instructor could not figure out why I was on that group. He did go over the eval and gave me all high marks and recommende that I be in group 2; not such luck, NHIS again and group 3. I kept going into the pits in order to have some running space.
This time the same recommendation. In September, at Watkins Glen, we had to drivers and there were only two groups1 & 2. I was placed in group one and the instructor signed me off to solo. Someone complained to the instructor that I was too slow; However, no one took the time to find out that I have a stock 228is, and I was passing some M3's, and I was going as fast as the car could go.
There should be some mechanism whereby as I driver you would know that you are making progress, and know what are the steps that you have to take in order to move up in class or to solo.

| | Good feedback about evals. I don't do the registration, but as I understand the process, they consider the last instructor's recommendation (current run group and suggested new run group), number of track days driven, and the driver population at the event. The run groups have to be made up out of whatever students happen to register. Sometimes this means that the division between the groups is more a reflection on the speed and cars of the other drivers than it is on your skills. Away events, such as the Glen and Mt Tremblant tend to attract more experienced drivers (because it is so much easier to start with a close event at NHIS er NHMS (New Hampshire Motor Speedway, that's going to take some getting used to), and so away events tend to have more experienced drivers in lower run groups. A slower car will also tend to get you placed in a lower group to help minimize the amount of passing needed to avoid trains. If you feel that you are classed in the wrong group, particularly for a multi-day event, speak to your instructor. It may be possible to change groups. Or not. Instructor workload, run group size, and track-imposed car limits also come into play. Remember that everyone is super busy in the morning, so usually changes can't be done that day. If you were consistently placed in the wrong group in previous events, you could also speak with the registrar (or your previous instructor, if you can contact them). As you drive with the club more, the registrars get to know your driving and generally can do a better job of placing you. I'm not fond of the current evaluation form, and there are changes underway. The forms are an INCREDIBLE amount of work to scan and e-mail back to you. Many completely thankless mind-numbingly boring hours are spent doing this. We are trying to get a pilot program underway so that some of this will be done on-line. At the same time, we hope to improve the form so that you will find it more useful. Everyone is different in how they fill out the forms. Personally, I try to write comments where I have something constructive to say, and tell the student what areas I think should be worked on. I don't think I've ever failed to fill out an evaluation form (either as a student or now as an instructor). It irritates me when I spend a lot of time thinking about it and writing a good evaluation and I don't get one from the student. And I will admit that I have a terrible memory. Sometimes I just don't remember how smooth your heel-and-toe downshifts were (or was that one of my other two students?). For myself, I need to work on this, perhaps taking notes during the day. |
| | | | | Thank you for your reply, it is nice to have an inside into the working of evals and placements.
One of our companies does online forms, let em know if we can be of help.
