My mom was a bit of a volvo enthusiast so my first car was an '83 240 turbo (stick, of course) and as part of learning to drive she taught me about apexes and braking and the like. She's fast but she's never really been to a track day (I have two E30s now and I hope to get her out this season in my IX) but still, having that connection with one of my parents (especially my mother) was a truly great experience. Get your kids out there, they will love it and will learn skills that could save their lives!

Cheers,
Brendan
AVA Restoration Services - Dublin, NH

RE: So I'm cooking and can hear the cartoon playing on the TV in the living room...

Dan/John - Just ran across this post on a slow Friday night - My daughter is 17 and can't wait to take the E30 M3 out on the track next year. It is personal for her, since she rode home from the hospital in the car the day she was born. It seems like a perfect circle in life.

My son, who is 25 has been on the track one time, as a passenger in the M3 with me driving. He thought it was cool "sort of like a roller-coaster", but so far he hasn't wanted to do it himself.
- John

RE: So I'm cooking and can hear the cartoon playing on the TV in the living room...

The stereotyping is of course horrible. Especially when you look at the ratio at HPDEs (:hehe:).

My wife wonders why I find driving around in a circle so interesting. (road courses are topologically circles.) She's come to watch a couple of times. She says "every few minutes you go by -whoosh-. then you are gone, then you go by again. -whoosh-." There is a very deep and broad lack of interest. My daughter (19) is the same. My son (21) is somewhat interested. He's been karting and to an autocross school. Someday a DE maybe, but he's still not that into it.

Good luck

john

So I'm cooking and can hear the cartoon playing on the TV in the living room...

Some (gawd awful) Disney show (Phineas and Pferb or something). There is a girl who is feigning interest in auto racing because the driver is cute. The boy is talking about how great this race is. The girl says, "And it's so interesting. First they turn left. Then they turn....." and the conversation trails off to nothing.
Got a chuckle out of that. Of course, given that I have a daughter, I didn't love the sex role stereotypes. I have hopes of sharing track days with her in a decade or so.
