| | Two very good ideas. Regarding helmets, the Boston Chapter ran a track event for BMW/Mini dealerships of Peabody and that somehow there were helmets available. I will look into seeing if these could be available for the track. Ironically, we are actually planning on rolling out a pilot "Taste of the Track" program similar to what you suggested. Since I was the new guy at the meeting, I seems to be in charge of it (short straw). The concept is that for a small amount of money (maybe $30, plus or minus) someone would get a chance to attend the driver's meeting, classroom, work a flagging station and get some time (maybe a session) in an instructor's car, being driven at a reasonable (i.e. safe, but fast) pace. I think the concept is to do this in the morning so that they would be free to go home at around lunch time, and we'd do it at NHMS, so it would be close to the Boston / New England home base. Some sort of helmet rental would be available, either included or at a small extra cost. If anyone has a suggestions for this "Taste of the Track" program, please let me know. |

| oldredracer (2/6/2008) Couple of things. 1. Have instructors/mentors contact newbies via phone or email prior to the event. 2. Tell the newbie that one of his first responsibilities upon arrival is to find his instructor. Give him make/color/number etc to make it easier but make him do it. That would not only give him guidance for his first event but encourage the instructor by making him think the student actually cares. 3. I think we already have newbie checklists for car prep./ registration/ tech etc available either online or in the mail prior to the event...don't we??? 4. Instructors need to have a pretty concise opening conversation which includes 'why are you here? what are your goals today? 'here's what's gonna happen' and a reminder that especially on your first day going fast is secondary to car control and placement. Speed comes after smoothness. Smile a lot. Remind him that you're still alive after___ years of doing this and you ain't gonna let him kill himself today. Which, by the way, is pretty much your responsibility anyway.I swear the chapter used to do all these things (8-9 years ago), as well there was a list somewhere of things to bring to the track and what to expect. I remember being told to find my instructor and talk to him after the drivers meeting as well. |
